It is with sorrow that we announce the death of Mr WH (Bill) Findlay. Foremost rower of his generation, Bill was MRC Captain three times 1953-4, 1960-1 & 1969 and President 2008-13. He also served for many years as Chairman and President of Marlow Regatta.

The arrangements for Bill’s funeral are as follows:-

The date is Monday 11th January, when a private (family only) cremation will take place at 11:00am at Amersham. This will be followed by a Service at All Saint’s Church, Marlow at 12:30. After the service, all are welcome to cross the river to Marlow Rowing Club.

This from Bill's predecessor as President, Sir Francis Ferris:

Bill was already a long established member of the Club when I first rowed.  This must have been in the 1953 Head of the River Race.  Later that year (or was it 1954?) he rowed for the Club in the final of the Wyfold Cup at HRR in a four with Bryn Evans, Alan Clay and Roy Light.  He seemed to do everything in the Club (and also in the Regatta, Marlow Players and probably many other organisations - he was one of the world's great 'doers').  He went to Sarawak to work for a few years but resumed all his old activities after he returned.  When I was Chairman in the 1970's he was again one of the most prominent members of the Committee.  I remember how depressed I was when he gave up his Committee membership and how gratified to find that this made no real difference to his performance.  He always spoke his mind which involved him in many quarrels, although I think it made him no real enemies.  I was so glad that he became my successor as President.  Had I realised that he was willing to take on the job I would have retired earlier!
