On 28 February the first season of Explore Rowing’s competition in our region ended at Hillingdon Rowing Club. This initiative was triggered by Jonathan Walne, our Captain, working closely with Paul Lorenzato, the British Rowing Area Participation Manager.

The first event in the competition took place on 11 October at Marlow, with side by side racing over 250m, in a 28 race round robin tournament. Umpires Mike Densley and Graeme Armstrong helped superbly, and David Plaskitt’s mathematical skills helped the round robin format during the series. This was followed by more side by side racing over 250m (30 races) at Molesey Boat Club on 29 November. An 'Explore' category was created for Molesey Veterans’ Head, though river conditions  forced that Head’s cancellation on 13 February. Hillingdon Rowing Club organised the final event - a skills head over 1000m with emergency stops, backing down exercises, rigger dips, 90° turns and sprint finishing.

Explore Rowing has been devised to give a competitive identity to older recruits to our sport. Racing is done in our Swift Racing touring boats, and has proved fiercely competitive, and very popular for the majority of recruits from Learn-To-Row. Eleven crews took part from Hillingdon, Maidenhead, Marlow, Molesey, Reading, Staines and Weyfarers. The winners were Staines “Blades of Glory,” followed by Reading Explore. Our own Improver crews, the Imps and Rovers were placed third and fourth respectively, in spite of the latter being unable to boat, as a result of family responsibilities. Welcome to the world of Masters Rowing!

The final results table is below. The League has promoted some good social activity between clubs, and stimulated improved technique and physical fitness. The new season starts again in April and will run through to March 2017.
