Marlow Rowing Club Junior Development Squad (JDS ) aims to introduce talented athletes from the age of 12 to the sport. Our squad members are selected on merit in trials; these are arranged for both scullers with some experience and those who will experience the sport for the first time at Marlow.

JDS is the 'incubator' for the Junior Squads at Marlow.  Our Juniors are successful and ambitious with an enviable track record of success in National and International competition. The Development Squad provides an enjoyable and progressive introduction to the sport through which we develop young athletes to compete in local regattas within a few months.  Progress from JDS to the Junior Squads is on merit, and in line with individual maturity and potential - the best can earn a place with Marlow Juniors in less than six months, others will need longer.

Rowing is a demanding sport, but also an exciting and fun one. Our training sessions develop the young athletes’ water skills, their general physiology and build an understanding of one of Great Britain’s fast-growing and successful sports. We aim to foster a long-term commitment to rowing in talented youngsters as a foundation for their future sporting success and personal development.

When we train

JDS runs from September to July in three terms which mirror the school year.

The group trains on weekend afternoons between 14.00 and 16.30 throughout these months; boys on Saturday and girls on Sundays. There are two types of sessions: 'on-water' which develop skills in rowing and safe watermanship; and fitness development.  Fitness development sessions are mainly gym-based, helping to improve  strength, stamina and agility. The fitness development sessions take place in the winter months when river conditions are unsuitable for novice scullers and are also run to help youngsters to prepare for specific competitive events.

Progression and Development

All athletes in the Development Squad are assisted to become proficient scullers and experienced competitors whilst working to earn a place in our Junior crews.  This will involve them in progressively more demanding training and participation in open competitions under the Britsih Rules of racing.

All our athletes aspire to take up a place with Marlow Juniors.  We recognise that becoming a member of Squads which compete at national level will require a high level of commitment from the athletes and from their parents. We will normally discuss progress in the sport and individual circumstances with parents several times before a decision is made to offer a place in the Junior Squad.

If you would like to find out more about starting out in the sport at Marlow, please contact us to request a copy of our briefing notes.   When you write, let us know the name of the aspiring sculler, the school they attend,  date of birth and something of their sporting track record.

Marlow Rowing Club Women's Masters Squad

Since we formed two years ago, the Squad has had success in World Masters Regattas, National Masters, Henley Vets, Veteran's Head Races ( Fours and Eights), and various regattas both local and further afield. We also had a crew in the Voga Longa in Venice in May this year, and occasionally we make up combined crews with the Masters Men, when event programmes allow.

The Women's' Masters have been allocated boats and blades for both sculling and sweep oar. I am the Coach (details below) and members of the squad help me with the administration side of things. We currently have a regular young coxswain from outside the squad, who receives payment from a kitty the Squad holds for that purpose. A small number of squad members also cox occasionally, which is very helpful.

I would be pleased to meet with you, have a chat and show you around.
