{joomplu:21}Marlow Rowing Club's development squads won the women's novice coxed fours, the women's novice eights and the men's novice coxed fours at Twickenham regatta on Saturday 23rd May.

Both mens and womens development squads have only been rowing since September. The men beat 7 other crews to win their coxed four competition, while the women won 5 races in their two events to gain their double victories. The women's coxed four of Tamsin McAllister, Hannah Cumming, Dawn Thompson and Bex Cawtherley, coxed by their coach Lisa Knill had a bye in the first round and met Mortlake, Anglian and Alpha in the semi final. Marlow powered the boat through their rivals to win by 4 lengths. The girls then met local rivals Maidenhead in the final and dispatched them to win their first trophies (aka 'pots') easily.

Building on their success they joined with crew mates Anna Brazinova, Laura McHutcheon, Caz di Franco and special guest from the senior women's squad – Jo Wright to form the eight that would bring them their second pot of the day.

Again they had a bye in the first round and came up against Poplar in the quarter final who they dispatched with a 4 length lead to meet Maidenhead again in the semi. The local opposition trailed in 4 lengths behind them and they had their place in the final. Local club Twickenham proved to be the most challenging opposition of the day. The two crews fought one another all the way down the course until in the last thirty strokes of the day the girls lifted the boat to beat the home club by 1 and ½ lengths.

The girls went home happy but exhausted and are back in training for the next events Metropolitan on Sunday followed by Peterborough the following weekend, Reading the weekend after and Henley Women's regatta on the weekend of June 19th – 21st. Their coach - Lisa Knill is delighted with their success and is sure it is down to the hard work that they put in, training 5 days a week.

For the men it was Matt Spittle, Andy Harrison, Mike Souter, Richard Goatman and cox Richard Stafford doing the honours in the hotly contested novice fours category. It was their first win of the season and richly deserved against some strong opposition.

Finally, Tom Moon and James Patch preserved some of the dignity of the more experienced sections of the club by taking the Intermediate 3 doubles prize.
